Sheep (Symbol of Innocence) By Bhumika
Joshi

"I am going to buy Jaipur", little Ronak said to his friend while playing a game of business. His sheer innocence made him believe that game notes were equivalent to real currency. For him, he was a billionaire in his own Utopian world.
One evening, he was coming back from market with his mother when he saw a little boy begging with Baskin Robbin's cup in his hand. Well, this is the irony of life. The glittering eyes of that boy were hard to resist for Ronak. Abruptly, Ronak began to run. He ran as fast as he could. His mother stood their in utter confusion.
Now, there was a smile on the little boy's face as there laid a five thousand rupee note in his bowl. Ronak stood near him with a grin of satisfaction. That business game's five thousand was not real but the happiness was. The kid's were innocent to not understand that the note was worthless but they were compassionate to understand each other. Never let this innocence die.

Second Prize
Islam by David Singh

The old man heard the safety catch click as he entered his kholi and stood stiff.

‘Switch on the light, quietly!’ The feeble voice commanded.
Old man did. He saw the rifle in lad’s hand and a lot of blood.

The bullet had missed his heart closely. He was trembling of
weakness. The old man flinched when suddenly the lad hit
the floor, passing out.
He found himself in the warm bed, his wound dressed. The
old man offered him the steaming bowl.
‘Why did you save me?’‘So that you don’t kill anymore. Eat and sleep. Police has
asked me to claim the dead bodies tomorrow.’‘Dead bodies?’

‘Yeah. My son, daughter-in-law and grandson. Returning
from vacations. You all killed them at Shivaji Terminus today.’
Stunning silence.
‘………………………………………………………..still……….. you…….
saved me?’
‘Quran, Chapter Five, Verse 32 in the end says: …..and if any
one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole of mankind…’
‘You are a Muslim?’
‘Yeah. My name is Mohamed Islam.’ Terrorist Akmal Razzak surrendered next day. In his statement he said that Islam showed him the way to surrender. He was hanged on November 21, 2012.

Third Prize
SHARING – ANOTHER MEANING OF BEING
HUMAN By Arjun Bhattacharya

AFTER A LONG TIME MY LUCK CLICKED. I GOT JOB FOR WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR A LONG TIME. I STARETD GOING OFFICE BY LOCAL TRAIN FROM KOLKATA. I SAW BEGGERS BEG FOR FOOD IN HOWRAH STATION. THERE WAS A MIX OF CHILDREN , MIDDLE AGED BEGGERS AND OLD AGED. THEY WERE HUNGRY. NEITHER GOVERNMENT NOR WE WILL COME TO RESCUE THEM. BUT WE SHOW OUR SYMPATHY. ONE DAY WHAT I SAW , BROUGHT BACK MY SENCE FROM A NON HUMAN MENTALITY. AMONG SIX BEGGERS , ONLY ONE GOT A PACKET OF LITTLE CAKE WHICH IS NOT EVEN ENOUGH FOR ONE PEOPLE TO FILL HIS STOMAC. BUT THIS PERSON OPENED THE PACKET AND SOMEHOW MANAGED TO DISTRIBUTE AMONG FIVE BEGGERS. I WAS STUNNED FOR FEW MINUTES. I OPENED UP MY TIFFIN BOX AND GAVE SOME FRUITS TO SOME CHILDREN. THEY WERE SO HAPPY . THEIR FACES WERE SAYING THAT THEY GOT SOME TASTE OF FOOD. I WAS SO HAPPY THAT DAY AND IT BECAME MY DAILY ROUTINE ON THE WAY OF MY OFFICE. I LATER REALISED, SHARING MY SOMETHING WITH SOMEONE , ONLY CAN GIVE MAXIMUM SATISFACTION IN LIFE. WE SHARE USELESS PICTURES IN FACEBOOK BUT NEVER SHARED OUR FOOD WITH HUNGER. PLEASE DO THIS THEN YOU WILL SEE THE MAGIC IN YOUR LIFE.
